Residential Design Experience

Randy L. Martin has a background of over 15 years designing energy conscious new homes and remodeling projects. He wrote a book entitled, "A Builder's Guide to Iowa's IDEAL Homes" while working for the energy office in Iowa. Its been over 10 years since he designed his last project.  He discovered that it was more profitable to design web sites than it was to design houses.

The following is a list of projects designed by Mr. Martin.

Energy Conscious New Home Designs

Clark Residence, Adel, Iowa 9/95

2200 square foot 4 bedroom ranch on a development south of Adel. Vaulted great room. Walk-out to east. Designed using AutoCAD LT.

Sorenson Residence, Guthrie Center, Iowa 1/92

1700 square foot 3 bedroom tutor ranch on a farm west of Guthrie Center. Open plan for kitchen, dining, great room. Walk-out design to south with farm office located on lower level. Designed using AutoCAD.

Bird Residence, West Des Moines, Iowa 9/91

1600 square foot 3 bedroom ranch with 3-car garage on 2 1/2 acre lot. L-Shaped plan to allow long side to face the south. Cathedral ceiling in kitchen, dining, great room and master bedroom. Designed using AutoCAD.

Stursma Residence, Pella, Iowa 4/91

Passive solar, three bedroom, partial two-story design with balcony overlooking living room on 10 acre site . Designed using AutoCAD.

Bird Residence, Indianola, completed design development, not built

Two story, three bedroom design with loft overlooking the living area. Good south exposure.

Energy Efficient Show Home, Coon Rapids Municipal Utilities, 10/90, not yet built.

Design of energy efficient show home to be used as an example by the Coon Rapids Municipal Utilities and then sold as a spec house. Three bedroom, two-and-a-half bath house with vaulted great room and breakfast area in kitchen. Good south exposure.

Redesign of stock plan. Built by Jim White of Sunbilt Homes.

Sunbilt Spec Home, West Des Moines, 11/87.

Rassmussen Residence, West Des Moines, Pheasant Ridge 8/87.

Superinsulated design overlooking lake to the east. Built by Jim White of Sunbilt Homes.

Bray Residence, Iowa City, 6/86.

Energy detailing of another designer's traditional design. Airtight Drywall Approach with 2x6's. Aldes exhaust only ventilation system. Owner acted as general contractor.

Schminke Residence, Pella, 8/86.

Redesign of stock plan using 2x6 Airtight Drywall Approach. (Not built).

Day Residence, Davenport, 8/86.

Energy redesign of four-level split using 2x6 Airtight Drywall Approach.

Barnes Residence, Pella, 3/86.

Superinsulated, three bedroom walk-out ranch designed through Iowa Energy Builders. 12-1/2 inch walls, two-story open sunspace, walk-out to south, clerestory windows, mass storage wall.

Pollard Residence, Boone, 9/85.

Superinsulated design through Iowa Energy Builders. (Not built).

Peterson/Cox Residence, West Des Moines, 7/85.

Superinsulated, two bedroom ranch designed through Iowa Energy Builders. 12-1/2 inch walls with brick exterior.

Log Home Designs

Spike Residence, Ankeny, Iowa 12/96

Three bed room, 2 bath log home with conventionally trussed garage and log siding on garage gable end. Designed using AutoCAD.

Tarr Residence, Cedar Falls, Iowa 12/93.

Three bedroom, 2 1/2 bath log home with sunspace. Design incorporated conventional gable ends and conventional garage truss roof. Designed using AutoCAD.

Humphrey Residence, Van Meter, Iowa 12/92.

Redesign of 4000 square foot executive passive solar log home. Four bedroom design with loft library and office. Project involved redesign to cut construction costs from an estimated $650,000 down to $400,000. Designed using AutoCAD.

Nichols Residence, Plattsmouth, Nebraska, 7/91.

Three bedroom, 3 bath ranch with walkout to south on 10 acre wooded site. This design incorporated a conventional roof with some regular trusses and some scissor trusses. Designed using AutoCAD.

McClain Residence, Pennsylvania, 9/90.

Two bedroom, two bath retirement home built next to golf course resort in the Pennsylvania mountains.

Turner Residence, Norwalk, 6/90.

Custom one-and-a-half story, three bedroom, three bath, Log Home design with separate living, dining, family rooms with two-way fireplace and an attached double garage designed through Log Struct.

Hewlett Residence, Grand River, 1/90.

Custom ranch four bedroom, two bath Log Home design through Log Struct. Owner built.

Starmer Residence, Norwalk, 7/89.

Redesign of Rocky Mountain Log Home plan RM 065 through Log Struct. Reversal of plan and redesign of stair and bedrooms.

Meisner Vacation Home, Sun Valley Lake, 6/89.

Redesign of Rocky Mountain Log Home plan R 049 through Log Struct.

Ackey Residence, West of West Des Moines, 6/89.

Schematic custom design of large Log Home through Log Struct. (Not yet built).

Burke Residence, Minburn, 5/89.

Custom two story, three bath, Log Home designed through Log Struct.
